How to Use an ELD in 2026: A 10 Step Driver Guide

If you are moving from paper logs, or starting out as a driver, an ELD can feel like one more screen to worry about. The good news is that a normal day only takes a few taps. The buttons look different on Motive, Samsara, Garmin or a budget app, but the steps are the same because every registered ELD follows the same federal rules. Here is a normal day in 10 steps.

1. Log In Before You Move

Open the app and log in with your own username. Every record has to belong to a driver, and any driving with nobody logged in becomes unidentified driving that you or the office will have to sort out later. Team drivers log in on the same device, and each one picks the right status.

2. Review Unassigned Driving

At login, many apps show unassigned driving events for that truck. Accept any that were yours. Reject the ones that were not, with a short note.

3. Check the Truck and Trailer Numbers

Make sure the app shows the right tractor and add the trailer number and shipping document number, such as the bill of lading or load number. Those fields appear in the log and an officer can ask about them.

4. Complete Your Pre Trip DVIR

Most ELD apps include a vehicle inspection report. Set your status to on duty, walk around the truck, note any defects and sign. Missing pre trip time is one of the most common log errors.

5. Let the ELD Switch to Driving

You do not press a button to start driving. Once the truck moves above 5 mph, the ELD changes your status to driving by itself. When you stop, it will ask whether you want to change status if the truck sits for about 5 minutes.

6. Change Status at Every Stop

At a fuel stop, pick on duty. At a meal break, pick off duty. At a shipper where you are waiting and released from duty, off duty may be right. The ELD records the location automatically with each change.

7. Watch Your Clocks

The main screen shows how much time you have left on the 11 hour driving limit, the 14 hour window, the 30 minute break and your 60 or 70 hour cycle. Our hours of service guide explains each one. Most apps warn you before you run out.

8. Fix Mistakes With Edits and Notes

If you forgot to change status, you can edit non driving time with a note explaining why. You cannot change driving time recorded by the ELD. If the office proposes an edit, you will see it in the app to accept or reject. Our editing ELD logs guide has the details.

9. Certify Your Log

At the end of each day, the app asks you to certify your log. That is your signature saying the record is true. If anything is edited later, you will need to certify again.

10. Know the Roadside Steps

At an inspection, you can show the log on the screen or send it to the officer by data transfer. Practice this once before you need it. Our ELD data transfer guide shows the usual steps, and the instruction sheet you keep in the cab covers your brand.

Tips From Drivers

  • Keep the tablet charged and mounted so you can see the clocks.
  • Turn off battery saving for the ELD app so Bluetooth stays connected.
  • Write clear notes. "Waiting at receiver, released" is better than "wait."
  • If the app shows a malfunction letter, switch to paper and tell the office. See our ELD malfunction codes guide.

If your current app is hard to use, you have options. Our best ELD for owner operators list ranks devices partly on how easy they are for drivers.

Can I edit my driving time on an ELD?
