The cost of keeping a truck on the road making money can be eye-watering. It can cost upwards of $180,000 annually in commercial truck operating costs. Who in their right mind wouldn’t want to see this figure reduced?
Well, that means making cuts here and there, monitoring usage to prevent fraud, among other things. Among the biggest components of that cost has to be the cost of fuel. Fuel prices have been on a slow but steady rise over the years and there seems to be nothing helpful to cut down on the amount spent.
What if there was a way to cut down on the cost of fuel that your trucks consume? Yes, that’s where fuel cards come in. Even if you will only be saving cents on the dollar, the savings will be massive when you factor in your annual costs.
The problem is, there are so many fuel cards out there, it is a daunting task just to figure out which of them to pick. Well, we’ve done the research to come up with 10 of the best fuel cards you can get today and start cutting down on your fuel costs.
As you are going through this list, I want you to keep in mind that they are not in order of the best to least. Each card is really tailored to meet the needs of a specific business group in the industry. One card may be great for your company and crap for the next, so consider your specific needs when determining the best option for you.

1. The Exxon Mobil BusinessPro Fuel Card
If you are the kind of person that wants nothing to do with monthly charges on a card that is supposed to help you save money, then the Exxon Mobil fuel card should be your top pick. The card will offer you a rebate that goes up to 6 cents per gallon on the purchases you make. The rate applied will depend on the total amount of fuel you purchase within a billing period.

The structure applied is as follows.
- 500 gallons or less will save 1 cent per gallon.
- 501 to 3,999 gallons will save 3 cents per gallon.
- 4,000 to 6,999 gallons will save 4 cents per gallon.
- 7,000 to 9,999 gallons will save 5 cents per gallon.
- More than 10,000 gallons will save 6 cents per gallon.
Also, the card allows you to view metrics on an online account as follows:
- Driver and card details.
- Available credit.
- Payment history
- Set restrictions on the types of purchases, transactions, dollar amounts, and gallons.
- Manage payments and invoices.
There are other details as well, but those are the ones that probably matter to you most.
2. Wex FlexCard
If you are a company that drives more locally and does not put a lot of miles on each truck, here is a card that will work best for you. The card is accepted at a whopping 95 percent of gas stations across the country. The Wex FlexCard is a charge card similar to that offered by ExxonMobil, but it has a flat 3 cent rebate no matter how much you drive.

While the Wex FlexCard does not offer as high of rebates in comparison to the ExxonMobil card, a 3 cent rebate on the gallons of fuel you purchase is still a great starting point. If you drive less than 4,000 miles per billing cycle, this card will likely save you more than ExxonMobile.
The card previously carried an annual fee, but that has been done away with. Aside from gas stations, this card can also be accepted at more than 45,000 maintenance locations all across the United States. You can use the system’s built-in fuel management services to manage your fleet and save even more on the fuel you purchase.
3. Shell Navigator Card
If you are the kind of company that finds yourself covering the entire nation, you would want a card that can work in the most remote parts of Wisconsin but still be accepted at the southernmost tip of Florida. That is what the Shell Navigator Card offers your company.

You can use the card at over 13,000 different Shell gas stations, as well as Jiffy Lube locations. There is always one of these wherever you go. You shouldn’t have to go hunting to find one.
This Shell Navigator Card is notable for the expense management systems and spending controls that are as superb as any other card you may come across out there. Unlike others, it is not exactly a charge card. It is more of a traditional credit card that allows you to carry forward any balance you have from month to month. The only downside is having unspecified limited fees.
Depending on the amount of fuel you purchase for the billing cycle, you can get to enjoy rebates of up to 5 cents per gallon.
The structure applied is as follows.
- 1000 gallons or less will save 1 cent per gallon.
- 1001 to 4,000 gallons will save 2 cents per gallon.
- 4,001 to 7,000 gallons will save 3 cents per gallon.
- 7,001 to 10,000 gallons will save 4 cents per gallon.
- More than 10,000 gallons will save 5 cents per gallon.
4. EFS Fleet One Edge Card
If you are a company that operates in a specific location, then the EFS Fleet One Edge Card should be something that may interest you. This card does not boast of national coverage like the others as it is only available to some 4,000 in-network sites. What you do get instead are rewards that allow you to save at least 15 cents per gallon at 2,200 EDGE Discount Stores that are participating in the reward scheme.

The EFS card is accepted at over 12,000 truck stops all across the country, which is still not as widespread as some of the other cards listed in this guide. However, there is no monthly charge on the card. Also, there are no transaction fees whenever a fuel purchase is made.
Additionally, there are savings on tires, wireless plans, maintenance, and more.

5. Fuelman
Depending on where you operate, if you are a regional company, the Fuelman Card could be the go-to card for you. This is a card that offers you different subscriptions that you can load up to your card. These subscriptions mean you get a fixed rebate for the amount you spend per billing cycle, which is great if you have an estimation of the fuel your truck consumes within that cycle.

Those subscription plans come with other features aside from fuel rebates. You also get real-time fraud mitigation notices; you get sweet annual loyalty bonuses as well as late payment forgiveness. In some cases, you may find yourself needing to pay for fuel, and that situation can be irregular. In such an instance, you get the opportunity to pay later without risking getting kicked out of the program.
Ultimately, if you are a smaller trucking company that could leverage some of the other benefits of their membership, this is a great card option for you.
6. Pilot Fleet Card
The Pilot Fuel Card, officially known as the Axle Fuel card, takes an interesting direction when it comes to helping you save fuel. Instead of applying rebates to the price of fuel, you instead get up to 3% cashback. So when gas costs $2.50 per gallon, you get back 7.5 cents. That may actually be a steal, as the more you spend on fuel, the higher the cashback.

This card allows for flexible payment terms but then comes with a substantial downside. The card is only accepted at Flying J, Pilot, and One9 fuel stations. The number of participating stations may actually stop you from getting the card, or force you to get another card to serve you when in locations where these fuel stops don’t exist.
The real downside to this card is that it can only be used at just over 1,000 locations. If you are able to plan your routes adequately and maximize the use of the network, this could very well be the best savings you will find.
7. BP Business Solutions Mastercard
Wouldn’t it be great if there was a card that offered greater solutions other than just paying for fuel? Well, that’s what the BP Business Solutions Mastercard is meant for medium to large truck fleets. This card comes with a $10 monthly fee that is quickly waived when the card user purchases more than 5,000 gallons of fuel in a month. That shouldn’t be too hard for a fleet of trucks.

Also, aside from just paying for the fuel, you can use this card to pay for maintenance services. Using this card will offer you up to 6 cents per gallon the more fuel you buy.
Keep in mind that fuel purchases outside of the BP and Amoco Networks are subject to an out-of-network transaction fee.
8. Comdata Card
To get started with the Comdata card, you will have a $5 per month fee after a $50 activation fee.
Here is a card that, unlike the Pilot Flying Card, which is only accepted in some 1,000+, you get to use the Pilot and Flying J network plus thousands more locations.

Tires are expensive, and with this card, you can get up to 65 percent off when you get new tires or retreads at over 3,000 locations. Talk about convenience.
However, what you are going to love about this card is the suite of apps that come along with it. For instance, you can easily make CAT Scale transactions from the CAT Scale App without spending time in line and much more.

The best part is, the Universal Premium Fleet Card works nearly anywhere and provides up to a 5% discount for various types of maintenance.
